Als in 1914 de Eerste Wereldoorlog uitbreekt, verklaart Nederland zich neutraal. Toch gaat de Grote Oorlog niet aan Nederland voorbij. Velen, op de vlucht voor het oorlogsgeweld, komen hier terecht. Maar ook militairen komen per ongeluk – of opzettelijk – het land binnen. Geven zij hun erewoord opdat ze niet zullen vluchten, dan genieten ze een redelijk vrij bestaan. Maar wie dit weigert, wordt geïnterneerd: opgesloten in speciaal hiervoor ingerichte kampen.
Urk heeft alles in huis voor zo’n interneringskamp. Het is klein dus overzichtelijk, ligt midden in de Zuiderzee en het kent een gezagsgetrouwe bevolking. Mandy van Dijk vernoemt haar boek, dat dit jaar bij Atlas Contact verscheen, naar de naam die de officieren aan Urk gaven: Île du Diable.
Linda en Bas bespreken dit spannende boek over het leven van de buitenlandse officieren in het interneringskamp op Urk. Wie waren deze mensen en waar kwamen ze vandaan? Hebben ze echt een tunnel gegraven? En waarom is Van Dijks onderzoek zo belangrijk? In de aflevering is een teruggevonden interview te horen met Albert van Urk. Zijn korte publicatie over dit onderwerp draagt de titel ‘Elba in de Zuiderzee’.
