Oktober 2020 verscheen bij uitgeverij Podium het boek De ontdekking van Urk van Matthias Declercq, een Vlaamse schrijver en journalist. Declercq woonde een half jaar op Urk, om ‘door te dringen tot de kern van deze voor de buitenwereld gesloten gemeenschap’.
Op Urk probeert Declercq zoveel mogelijk bewoners te spreken – van allerlei pluimage, om verder te reiken dan de clichés die steeds over dorp vloeien in de media. Ook ons eigen Bas Visscher trok een dag met hem op.
We spreken over het boek vanuit Bas’ vrolijke appartement – volhangen met schilderijtjes van de poldertoren, basaltstenen en Willem Arondeus. Over de vele gezichten van een plek dat steeds eenzijdig in het nieuws komt, het Urker paspoort, en over nachtelijke feestjes op het industrieterrein.
